When To Go

The best time to go is between October and March when the weather is cooler. It gets quite cold in January. Unless you have specific religious duties in mind it is better to avoid Varanasi during the Pitri Paksha before Navaratri in September / October when the city is crowded with pilgrims for the tarpan rituals. Holi is also best avoided as the streets become extremely unsafe.
